Department research is funded by both governmental and industrial agencies. With close international collaboration, faculty members are able to also carry out interdisciplinary research projects. In general, research can be grouped into six major categories: analytical chemistry, biochemistry/chemical biology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and polymer chemistry.
Analytical Chemistry Division
The department’s Analytical Chemistry Division is one of the leading analytical chemistry venues in Southeast Asia. Their research activities span from development of novel analytical techniques for nanotechnology, to mass spectrometric and separation science-related methodologies that target important problems in chemical analysis. The Analytical Chemistry Division’s principal goal is to provide high-quality training for students willing to pursue careers in industry as well as academia. Research students (at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels) are exposed to world-class expertise on a variety of topics, allowing them to gain practical industry and research-grade skills and techniques: mass spectrometry, chromatography, electrophoresis, and electrochemical analysis platforms to name a few.
Biochemistry/Chemical Biology/Interdisciplinary Division
Chemical biology is rapidly establishing itself as an important interdisciplinary field in which chemical methods are used to study problems in basic biology and biomedical issues. In turn, molecular biology is providing a growing number of tools and enzymatic reagents to the organic chemist. This cross-discipline approach brings biotechnology to a new dimension.
Our interdisciplinary division is designed for students interested in applying chemical skills to biological research. We provide teachings and research opportunities that integrate bio, analytical, and inorganic chemistry as well as molecular and nanobiotechnology. Several research directions are being explored using the following techniques and more: microbial screening, fermentation, gene cloning, recombinant protein expression, mass spectrometry, separations, and optical imaging. Through study of complex biological networks at the molecular level, new insights about protein chemistry can be gained, leading to new ideas in molecular engineering as well as development of new drugs, novel devices, and biosensors.
Inorganic Chemistry Division
One of the most prominent Inorganic Chemistry programs in Taiwan, this division's research interests focus on optoelectronic, thermoelectric, and inorganic nanomaterials as well as organometallics and bioinorganic processes. Providing quality education and professional training at both undergraduate and graduate levels the Inorganic Chemistry Division is ideal for those pursuing careers in academia and also for those who aim to continue in high tech industries. All current and incoming graduate students in the Inorganic Chemistry Division will have financial support as long as students maintain good academic standing and make great progress toward their goal.
Organic Chemistry Division
From physical organic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry to enzymatic preparation of various oligosaccharides for drug development as well as combinatory drug discovery and microwave-assisted polymer supported synthesis to name a few. Other topics include synthesis of biological important oligosaccharides, methodology for the synthesis of new functional molecules, and synthesis of organic and polymeric functional materials in opto-electronics, photonics, biosensors, and nanotechnology. The principle goal of the Organic Chemistry Division is to provide high-quality training for students interested in pursuing careers in industry and academia. Research students (Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate levels) are exposed to world-class expertise on a variety of topics, and taught practical skills and knowledge in synthesis and numerous spectroscopic methods including MS, LC/MS/MS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR, as well as fluorescence and CD spectroscopy.
Physical Chemistry Division
The Physical Chemistry Division is recognized as one of the best institutions in Asia for its leadership of world-famous senior scientists and state-of-the-art instrumentations. Students in this division will be able to join research raging from radicals and biomolecules to nano-particles and green energy materials with various advanced light sources and detection methods as well as the strong theoretical support from computational and theoretical chemistry.
Polymer Chemistry Division
Polymer science is a broad and interdisciplinary field covering many subjects: polymer materials, polymer physics, polymer engineering, and of course polymer chemistry. We aim to provide students with the understanding and knowledge of cutting-edge polymer science.
