Introduction

The department of applied chemistry is located in the Science Building II with 11,500 square meters. The department was established in 1982, starting with master’s program to cope with the national increasing need for experts in the field of applied chemistry. The department provides graduate students with sound training in both fundamental and applied chemistry. The undergraduate program was offered for the first time during the 1990-1991 academic year. Since 1992, the Ph.D. program has been given and the department furnishes the doctoral students an excellent environment for advanced studies in both pure and applied chemistry. For enhancing the interdisciplinary research, the institute of molecular science was further established in 2004. The department has been growing rapidly since it was established in 1982.Presently the department has 28 full-time faculty members and several adjunct appointments. More than 400 students are enrolled at the department for the current academic year. The ratio of graduate students to undergraduate students is nearly 1:1. In recent years, basic research facilities of the department have been greatly expanded and upgraded to facilitate the implementation of numerous interdisciplinary researches.Research facilities include high resolution NMR, various types of LC-MS, GC-MS, FT-IR, AFM, UV-VIS spectrometer, spectrofluorimeter, a full set of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) equipments, and many others.

The department interacts closely with and receives projects and supports from both industrial and government agencies. Research programs with high co-relation to many fields are currently in progress at the department including such fields as drug design and synthesis, supra molecule synthesis, photochemistry, enzyme chemistry, protein engineering, micro-fluidic analysis, bio-analysis, single molecular detection, molecular dynamics, laser chemistry, ultra-fast kinetics, nano-materials, superconductive materials, polymer materials, polymer science and technology, materials in the applications of photoelectronics and regenerated energy, computer simulation and theoretical calculation ... etc. These studies are grouped in 6 major fields, which are highly conjugated to a platform of interdisciplinary molecular science research, shown as the following figure.

The department offers financial aids to graduate students, in the form of both teaching and research assistantships. Most of the Ph.D. students receive fellowships from individual professors. For international graduate students, the university offers various sources of scholarships, which is described in later section.
